What are Kinran?

*Kinran is a fabric woven with a pattern made of finely cut plain gold thread, gold leaf thread, or silk thread wrapped with gold leaf. It is said to have started in the Song Dynasty, but it became popular around the Ming Dynasty and was called woven metal in China.
The pattern expressed on the brocade is “a masterpiece that makes use of traditional techniques, such as those that were introduced via the Silk Road and imitated the items of Shosoin.
In Japan, it is said that it was introduced as a Buddhist altar fitting and a robe. Because it uses a lot of gold, it is particularly luxurious among textiles. Kyoto’s Nishijin textiles are world-famous.
